• Adult Beginners Class

    White Belt — 13 years and older *

    The focus of your training time in class will be to concentrate on basic technique, introduction to kata, dojo etiquette and physical fitness. Additionally, you will be exposed to basic karate terminology and phrases; a brief history of martial arts and more specifically, of Gojyu-Ryu karate. At this level we hope to challenge your personal limitations and develop a strong foundation for future learning.

  • Adult Intermediate Class

    Yellow & Orange Belt — 13 years and older

    Training time in class will be spent continuing to develop basic karate skills. The concepts of proper breathing and the exploration of ki energy, through the study of the kata Sanchin begins to broaden at this level. Yellow belt is also the beginning of kubudo (weapons) training where the Bo (staff) is introduced. By orange belt, you should be prepared to additionally explore the Sai and Tonfa. Karate theory, history and philosophy will continue to be embraced at more in-depth levels.

  • Adult Advanced Class

    Green to Shodan-ho — 13 years and older

    Training time in class will concentrate on more advanced technique, kata and kubudo, as the student prepares to grade to Shodan, 1st degree black belt. A greater understanding of the ethics of karate will be undertaken and the role they play in our lives will be more closely examined. In-depth knowledge of martial arts history, history of Okinawa Gojyu-Ryu, history of our International Meibukan Gojyu-Ryu Karate-Do Association, and terminology is expected. The classes at this level are designed to challenge and test the student. First kyu and second kyu students are encouraged to take leadership and teaching roles within the dojo, either by participating in the children’s classes and/or assisting new adult students.

  • Federal and Provincial Fitness Tax Credit

    The Meibukan Gojyu Karate Winnipeg traditional karate program is a Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) recognized physical fitness activity for which you may claim at the Federal and Provincial level up to $500.00 of your child’s membership fee until age 15. If you are between the ages of 16 and 24 you may only claim the Provincial amount of $500.00. Submissions for this fitness tax credit must be in accordance with the CRA guidelines. Tax receipts will be issued on request and at no cost to the member in February of each year for the claimable tax year.

* Adult Advanced Class - within this age group, the highest ranking a young adult (ages 13 to 16) may be presented is Shodan-ho, a black belt encircled by a white stripe. As a member of the International Meibukan Gojyu Karate Association, no child/young adult may receive a full dan ranking, i.e. full Shodan, until the age of 16. At this age, the karate-ka is considered mature enough, both mentally and physically, to have conferred upon her/him, all the rights and privileges of an adult, within karate.
