Home School Karate Program (HSKP)
The HSKP has been offered to the Home School Community since September 2008. This traditional Okinawa karate program is offered to both the children and parent/guardian members active in home schooling (ages 6 and up). The program is run in two separate sessions September to December and January to June with on-going registration accepted throughout the year. Classes are once a week on Friday afternoons. For more information on cost and registration please contact us directly.
The Program
This program is designed to introduce you and/or your child to karate. Utilizing the more traditional philosophy of martial arts training, our karate system is viewed as a part of one’s life. Learning is gained through interactive games, training in basic karate techniques, kata (forms) and the passing of history through oral tradition. The purpose of this class is to use karate practice as a vehicle to build physical, mental and social skills. Physically, you and/or your child will work to develop co-ordination, strength, balance and both large and small motor skills. Mentally, you and/or your child will work towards improving concentration. Socially children will learn responsibility for their actions, to work with partners, take instruction and be introduced to the precepts of the art of traditional Okinawa Meibukan Gojyu-ryu Karate-do. Some of these precepts are honour, loyalty, courage, and commitment. Besides physical and mental growth, we work on developing character and leadership skills, through personal challenge.
Beginner Students
White to Orange Belts
At this level students begin their study of traditional karate. Besides physical and mental growth, we work on developing character and leadership skills through personal challenge. The older children are encouraged to be role models for the younger children, as are the adults.
Advanced Students
Green to Black Belts
At this level, new skills will continue to be added. There will be greater stress on the development of leadership skills along with personal and social responsibility. The senior students will begin to take a more active role in assisting the younger and/or less experiences students. Self defence is emphasized through bunkai (application). Those that succeed to this level will often advance to the black belt.
